Do what you love and the money will follow…
That’s what all the gurus say, but quite frankly, I didn’t understand what the hell that meant. I acted like I knew that if I did what I loved, what made me feel good – the money would follow.
But the truth is that I didn’t believe that was possible. C’mon, how many people do you actually know that love what they do and make lots of money doing it?
Well somewhere along the way I must have accepted that to make money, I must do what I have to, whether or not I was happy doing it.
To tell you the truth I felt guilty even thinking about charging for helping others in a way that made me feel good. How could I possibly charge anyone for making their day or changing their life?
Then it hit me. I’ll use an example to explain why “do what you love and the money will follow” works.
Say you go to a restaurant and you are greeted by 2 waiters. You have the choice to have either of them serve you that evening. The first one has a bad attitude and rolls her eyes as you walk in the door. You can tell she doesn’t like what she does.
The other waiter greets you with a smile and warm welcome. As he walks through the restaurant he is joyful, smiling, joking with his customers and making sure they have a good time. You decide that’s the waiter you want to serve you. At the end of the night, you receive your bill and because you and had such a wonderful time decide to give your waiter a 20% tip instead of the usual 15% you generally tip. He’s ecstatic and wishes you a good night.
On the way out you notice the first waitress complaining about the tips she received that night. Then you look over your shoulder and notice your waiter skipping along to the happy tune of the tips he received that night jingling in his pocket.
For many years, I was just like the waitress with a bad attitude. I was doing work I didn’t really like, dealing with people that made my life miserable (now I know that they were just reflecting how I felt about my life) and struggling for money.
I finally decided to do what I love…help people create a life they love. I can honestly say that my life since then has been easy and effortless. Now I don’t struggle to make ends meet. It’s as if I am a magnet and I attract only good to me. This includes money, supportive people, opportunities and gifts. New clients show up through referrals, the internet, and other unexpected sources and the money keeps pouring in. It’s lovely…and guess what? You can have that too.
Think of it this way:
Do what you love = ABUNDANCE in every area of your life!
The waiter in the story was a perfect example of how doing what you love attracts money and many other good things into your life.
Now it’s time for you to ask yourself:
1. Do I love what I do for a living?
2. Do I feel good throughout the day?
3. Is my career easy and effortless?
If the answers are YES, then congratulations, I’m sure you are abundant and happy. If you answered NO, then it’s time to reprogram your thinking. You don’t have to do something you don’t like to make money. Make a list of your dream career – go ahead, it’s okay to dream big, and don’t discount any skills you have that you love to do, even if you consider them hobbies.
Once you make your list then begin to take steps toward making that your reality. You will be surprised by how quickly the Universe begins to demonstrate your dreams once you take action!
